Photo Fridays, The Marbled Godwit

We found these guys hanging out near the water line during a walk along Fletcher Cove Beach Park. Some of them were boring through the sand with their bills, while others stood like this, on one leg, heads turned and bills nestled in their feathers. California is one of the migratory destinations for the marbled godwit. Their plumage changes when the breeding season comes. Cinnamon dusting their underbellies.

As for the photo, I like the silky texture of the sand. The subtle undulation and the way the surface reflects the birds. The high contrast exposure both desaturates the image as well as highlights the shapes and texture.
